The formula (due to Heinrich Hertz) gives the maximum contact pressure for elastic solids where the surface
of contact is a circle radius a. It comes from an area of mathematics known as “contact mechanics.” This might
be the first step in any attempt to model the “deformation” of one orange resting on another, or the deformation
of an orange pressing on the surface of the bowl.
